Para Crescer e Ser Feliz (To grow up and be happy)
Caixote launches a manifesto book on children's rights written by the children of Maré
Almost eight decades after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, children and teenagers from Maré, in Rio de Janeiro, search for and find the most fitting words to declare the rights they believe belong to everyone. These are simple desires, like having their mother close by and being able to look out the window.
The listening duo Ananda Luz and Isabel Malzoni heard their demands and organized them into a poetic manifesto. That was just the beginning! They invited illustrators to manifest alongside them. (By the way, I keep wondering how each of us adults could and should respond to these claimed rights.)
The result is in your hands: a manifesto book that cannot be contained on bookshelves. One that needs to reach schools and community spaces, spark good conversations, and (hopefully!) inspire new manifestos.
Bel Santos Mayer
A book born from the production of Eu devia estar na escola [I Should Be in School] (Editora Caixote, 2024), during which the desire grew to record their dreams, potentials, yearnings, and, most importantly, what would be non-negotiable for them to live a good life.
It is beautiful to envision a better future together, even though it can also be painful to remember what hurts. It is immense to invite every child and teenager to speak of a collective dream. This is because, amidst so much violence, the possibility of dreaming of a better place often slips away. And who are the children and youth whose right to dream about the future is actually guaranteed?
Here, together (children, teenagers, and adults from diverse realities), we reflect on and claim what is needed "to grow up and be happy."
