“To be a good fisherman, you need courage. It also helps to know how to swim, after all, canoes capsize. That is, of course, in addition to knowing the fish, the tools, and the signs of the river. And being able to stay silent. But the most important thing, I still think, is having courage.”
Featuring text by Isabel Malzoni, sensitive illustrations by Vitor Bellicanta, and the authentic contribution of fisherman William Miguel da Silva Rodrigues, the book invites readers to step into the canoe, decipher the river’s signs, and inhabit the silence. Moreover, it demonstrates that facing the waters requires, above all, bravery.
The authors
Isabel Malzoni is an editor and writer. Shw was born in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) in 1983, and has lived in São Paulo (SP) since childhood. Although she does not know how to fish and lives far from the river, she was captivated by the river-dwelling culture she encountered in Acajatuba, home to Miguel, and by the wealth of knowledge the local children possess regarding the river, the animals, and the rhythms of nature. She founded Editora Caixote in 2015 and, since 2023, has also worked as a scribe, compiler, or author of books born from research with children, having published titles such as Eu devia estar na escola, Para crescer e ser feliz, and Criança que é criança (no sertão).
Vitor Bellicanta is a writer, book illustrator, designer, father, and agroecologist. Born in 1978 in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), he had a special experience in the Amazon during his youth. He traveled along the Rio Negro and caught some piranhas-caju as well as a large, black puxa-puxa piranha. Now, he wants to return to hone his fishing skills with the master, Miguel.
William Miguel is quite a boy. Born in 2014 in São Francisco do Bujaru, a community located on Lake Acajatuba (Amazonas), he comes from a family of fishermen. He is the son of Osvaldo and Eulane and the grandson of Pedro and Maria Dilce; of them all, only his mother does not fish. He has four siblings. He prefers fishing to studying, though he is making an effort to improve his reading and writing skills, that is, whenever the urge to fish doesn't get the better of him, leading him to hide in his father's boat so he can tag along on fishing trips.
